For my Girl Scout Gold Award project, I put reusable bins in each elementary school classroom in my school district to collect discarded crayons that would have been thrown away. To help explain the project to the students and teachers, I made a comic with instructions for what to do that came with the bins. At the end of each school year, I took all the discarded crayons from all the schools and sorted them by color, and then donated them to The Crayon Initiative.  One year, I collected 440 pounds of crayons from just ten schools. Now, the elementary schools in my district will be saving and sending crayons to the Crayon Initiative for many years.
